Insider’s Knowledge

To properly learn more about the exquisite Matild Palace, we traveled to the “Pearl of the Danube” - Budapest. After checking in at this Luxury Collection property, we crossed the lobby and walked through a narrow corridor only to discover one of the hotel’s most charming venues: The Matild Café and Cabaret, dating back to 1901, which was the first café to reopen in the city after the Second World War. Upon entering this space, we were automatically taken to the grandiosity of a bygone era while simultaneously being subject to a sort of enchantment by the elegant violinist and pianist, who greeted us with some of the finest classical music. Distracted by the stunning looks of this room and its upper gallery, we almost missed the A-class Hollywood celebrity quietly enjoying a light meal in the corner.

After taking more time to enjoy the unique atmosphere, we headed to the 6th floor, where the hotel’s spectacular rooftop bar, The Duchess, is located. As we’d anticipated, the views didn’t disappoint, and the feeling was to have Budapest at our feet; some of the city’s iconic landmarks, like the Elizabeth Bridge, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and Buda Castel, were quietly welcoming us. As the calm Danube waters scintillated, we enjoyed our favorite drinks while the sun prepared to set behind the Buda hills.

Later, we sat down with Ms. Noemi Olah, one of the hotel directors, who embodies Hungarian hospitality. While sipping a green tea from the hotel’s refined porcelain cup, it was time to learn why the Matild Palace is regarded today as the best hotel in Budapest.

  • In my opinion, I would say The Duchess, a secret rooftop liqueur library and garden inspired by the Arch Duchess Maria Klotild. This glamorous hideaway boasts enviable 360-degree views of Budapest.

  • Crown Tower Suite

Have you ever heard about a suite with a 48-meter-high dedicated tower? I’m guessing not (laughs). At this extraordinary three-floored suite, the pinnacle of a luxury stay, we have a spiral staircase that leads to a private terrace offering 360-degree vistas of Budapest. Up there, and to the delight of our esteemed guests, there’s even a telescope that magnifies many of Budapest’s attractions.

    Maria Klotild Royal Suite

Named after the visionary behind the construction of this palace, the Maria Klotild Royal Suite, with its 150 sqm, is the preferred choice for those who value space the most. It features a beautiful master bedroom, a bathroom inspired by the Budapest baths that comes with its crystal pendant, a stylish living room, a dining table for parties of eight, and a study room for enjoying quieter moments. As if all this wasn’t enough, the views of the Danube River are splendid.

    Loft Rooms & Suites

Occupying the fifth floor of the Matild Palace, the loft rooms and suites allow for first-row views of the Danube and the Gelért Hill on the Buda's side, which can be admired while lying down in a low comfortable leather bed. The rooms range 41sqm while the gorgeous suites go up to 74 sqm.

    Elizabeth Bridge Suite

The name kind of gives it all away: the Elizabeth Bridge will most likely be the guest’s first sight upon waking up. The bedroom has everything you can ask for; the bathroom features a marble countertop, double sinks, heated flooring, and a stand-alone bathtub with romantic views of Budapest’s roofs.

  • “Royal.”

  • Luxury is our sense of place; it's the details in our architecture, the well-thought design, and our exemplary staff that delivers an experience that is both personalized and extraordinary.
