The Hotel’s Window

Virtually unknown to the world before 2003, the enchanting Gangtey Valley was put on the map of dreamful Asian travel destinations thanks to Khin Omar Win and Brett Melzer, who envisioned the creation of an extraordinary lodging experience in consonance with the highly-regarded Bhutanese hospitality. Years later, Gangtey Lodge was opening its doors and portraying scenic vistas of the Phobjikha glacial valley, from which one can only be distracted by the occasional black-necked crane flying by or gentle interactions with the warm-hearted staff.

Insider’s Knowledge

Who would be better to speak to and learn more about Gangtey Lodge if not co-founder Khin Omar Win? Here’s what she had to share regarding this one-of-a-kind, 12-roomed Bhutanese ‘Farmhouse’ that has been appointed as one of the 100 most incredible hotels in the world.

  • The windows of Gangtey Lodge all tell the story of a valley once hidden from the world. The Bhutanese arched windows frame the ever-changing sweeping views of the valley below, etched into a U shape over thousands of years. Below sits the wetlands, a protected nature reserve and home to 13 endangered species. The beautiful black-necked cranes flying from the Tibetan plateau yearly to roost are the most sacred and famed. On the right of the frame sits the 17th-century Gangtey Goenpa (Monastery) atop a verdant knoll. It sits peacefully, guarding over the sleepy farming villages below, where spirits and demons roam, providing spiritual protection throughout the year.

  • At Gangtey Lodge, we are blessed in many ways, including the sweeping views we are fortunate enough to enjoy from the outdoor terrace and all rooms. I’d say that the experience of enjoying a cup of coffee or reading a good book while having the valley at one’s feet is challenging to surpass. Having such a panorama to absorb is a sense awakening experience.

  • A fabulous view is guaranteed no matter what room a guest is assigned. All our rooms face the valley, offering sweeping views of the evergreen forests and village life below.

  • By soaking in their in-suite bath while taking in the stunning view of the valley below, fire crackling, and a glass of wine in hand, or by enjoying breakfast on the Terrace, listening to the birdsong at first light, with a warm lavender scented neck-pillow draped across one's shoulder.

  • “Breathtaking.”

  • Luxury at Gangtey Lodge is about delivering rare and unique experiences that elevate the senses and leave guests feeling a sense of fulfillment.

Hotel’s Location

Placed in central Buthan, Asia, the Gangtey Lodge is one of those places we are thankful for being so remote; after all, that makes it a much-appreciated, virtually undisturbed retreat. Getting to the lodge requires flying into Paro Airport, where international links to cities like Bangkok, Kathmandu, Kolkata, and Delhi are available. From Paro, the driving journey takes about 5 hours, which includes stops in scenic spots for picture-perfect moments. Alternatively, guests can take a helicopter flight from Paro, reducing the travel time to no more than 30 minutes.
